Release agents

Wax-based and silicone-based release agents are chemicals that create an anti-adhesion-type barrier between the product and the surface of the mold (matrix, tooling). The use of a release agent ensures excellent demoulding without negative consequences for both the product itself and the tooling. Release agents are the guarantor of the reuse of the forming matrices. Mold cleaners are used to clean the molds after use.

Release waxes are pasty compounds based on synthetic and natural waxes (carnauba, bee). They are applied to the surface of matrices on which products from composite materials, rubber, and polymers are formed. The separator fills the micropores, dries up and forms a strong elastic film – a barrier layer that prevents the product from sticking to the mold and makes it easier to separate and remove.

Separator OSKAR’S M-700 / C-WAX

Silica-free paste wax specially formulated for polyester and epoxy matrices and very easy to remove.
Instructions for use:

Apply OSKAR’S M-700 / C-WAX in a circular motion with a soft cloth to an area not exceeding 70 × 70 cm.

With a light movement of your hand, immediately after the appearance of a light white coating, polish the wax using a few pieces of clean, soft cloth.

Remove excess wax immediately.

On new matrices, apply 4 coats of OSKAR’S M-700 / C-WAX, allowing a flash time of at least 6 hours per coat. Leave the last layer for 24 hours. After each of the first 3 removals, apply a layer of OSKAR’S M-70/ C-WAX with a 6 hour exposure

To restore old forms, if necessary, apply OSKAR’S M-700 / C-WAX with a holding time for at least an hour.

Prepare the matrix with polishing paste beforehand.

Separator BUFA Oldopal (natural)

OLDOPAL®-Release Lacquer is a polyvinyl alcohol based release agent dissolved in an ethanol / water mixture. Once dry, the mortar creates a glossy and durable release layer.

OLDOPAL®-Release Lacquer is used as a release agent in the production of fiberglass products, for new dies or dies after repair.

The release agent should be applied to the surface of the die or mold using a sponge or soft material in a thin layer in one pass. Before applying, the sponge must be squeezed out so as not to get too thick a layer. The brush can be used to apply on complex

Press forms. The dried layer is removed with water.

BUFA Oldopal (natural) has a transparent “natural” color.

Depending on the complexity of the mold surface, the application rate is approximately 30 – 70 g / m2. Drying time is 10 to 15 minutes at temperature of 20 ° C, in higher humidity, correspondingly longer.

Purpose and features of the use of release agents

The best removal of the product is achieved due to the following factors:

  • Thorough cleaning of the matrix surface from contamination before processing with a separator.

  • Correct selection of a separator – proceed from the material of the matrix, the material of the product and the required quality of its surface.

  • Glossy matrix surface – the better the polished surface after wax treatment, the fewer irregularities on it, the easier it is to remove the product from the mold (without sticking) and the better the product is at the output (without defects).

  • Wax formulations allow the production of products in series – up to 10 removals, after which the coating is renewed.

Application. General recommendations

The optimum air temperature in the working room is 20 ° C.

Small areas are treated with release agent. With a piece of soft cloth or a sponge, the composition is spread over the surface in a circular motion without pressure. It is important not to miss any section, especially the corners.

After processing the surface of the matrix, wait until the wax dries. It should turn white, cloudy, matte – then the coating is ready to shine. It is very important to capture this moment. Otherwise, the layer will harden strongly and will not be polished or an insufficiently hardened layer will be removed from the surface.

The surface is polished to the appearance of gloss with a cloth that absorbs liquid. For this, not coarse microfiber is suitable.

The release agent is applied in thin layers 4 to 7 times at intervals of 30-45 minutes. The last layer is kept for 6-12 hours.

If this is the first time a resin matrix is used, alcohol is applied to the wax layer. Or you should wait a few days until all the styrene has evaporated. Otherwise, the release layer will not cope with its task, and the product will stick to the mold.

Each type of wax agent has its own characteristics – storage, application, application. Therefore, when using them, it is important to adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions.

How to check the quality of the release coating?

There are two ways to check the operation of the barrier layer:

1st method. Cut off a strip of paper tape. Stick to surface and pull. The adhesive tape comes off easily from a quality coating.

2nd way. Spray water over the surface with a spray bottle. The water should roll into drops, and drain from the vertical walls in a straight stream, leaving no traces.
