EPIDIAN® DECO FAQ part 3

EPIDIAN® DECO, in combination with Deco or Deco K Hardener, is an epoxy formulation designed to create unique, exclusive pieces of furniture and other interior design elements:

• create furniture and decor items based on wood and resin
• coating of wooden surfaces
• create epoxy river decorative countertops
• fill defects in wood
  create jewelry and other artistic elements

1. Can I use EPIDIAN® DECO varnish for extra protection?

Yes, you can use varnish, but it depends on what protection you want. Varnish usually does not provide additional protection against UV rays or high temperatures, but increases surface resistance to scratches. Our customers use and recommend brands such as HartzLak and NanoCeramic, which however have not been verified by CIECH Resins. Please remember that it is very important to apply the varnish according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. What is the minimum layer thickness for a composition based on EPIDIAN® DECO?

The smallest possible layer thickness depends on the thickness to width ratio (eg epoxy), the hardener you are using (DECO or DECO K) and your experience with resins. It is important to remember that overheating of the resin (more than 100 ℃ during curing) can cause partial yellowing, therefore in case of a little experience we recommend gradually increasing the thickness of the layers.

In general, the minimum thickness for EPIDIAN® DECO is 1 mm for DECO hardener and 1.5 cm for DECO K hardener.

3. What is the biggest difference between EPIDIAN® 652 and EPIDIAN® DECO in terms of finishes? Which resin should I choose?

EPIDIAN® 652 is not intended for use on furniture or jewelry. It is a fairly industrial resin for primer, laminate or putty. There is no color control and its hue can range from straw to yellow. Some yellowing may also occur after curing.

EPIDIAN® DECO has been specially developed for decorative applications and contains additives to improve application. It has strict color control (transparent) and increased UV resistance. In addition, the resin is supplied with two special hardeners with different reactivity parameters to suit your application, such as priming or epoxy streaming.

4. Is EPIDIAN® DECO resistant to high temperatures after curing? Can a hot mug or cigarette ash damage the surface?

The composition based on EPIDIAN® DECO is resistant to temperatures up to 50-60 ℃. A hot mug can leave a mark, so we recommend using rugs and food and drink coasters. Epoxies are generally not fire resistant, so ash can definitely damage the surface.
